Unit 1: Constructing Representations, Advertising

How to read an advert: (for Doom)

  • How do words/images/sounds/ work together to communicate a message?
The images and sounds of the trailer are all deep sounding so it conveys a feeling of something ominous that
  • What is the purpose of the advertisement?
The purpose of this advertisement is to get people interested and wanting to play Doom, the way that this is done is by showing the Doom guy killing demons and fighting through portals. This would make the audience excited if they are used to playing violent video games

  • How does it fulfil its purpose?

It shows off some gameplay features and some of the special "kill moves", that are a big feature of the game. This would make the audience want to buy and play Doom to see if it is anything based off of the trailers that have been shown and also they would want to buy it to see how fun the game is and if anything is really interesting.

  • What opinions does it make you form?

The opinions that I get from watching the trailer is that I think it'll be really fun to play and that it looks really interesting in how the story will be played out. It also makes me form the opinion that it will be a fun playing experience and very enjoyable.

  • Are those opinions the same as the ones you think are intended by the advertiser?
The opinions that I think the advertiser intended to get across were close to the ones I'm thinking because they would want the audience to have fun playing the game and the opinions from watching the trailer would be that they are excited to play Doom.

Location Scouting

This is the location scouting sheet that I used during the production of making my movie, this is very important because it shows which possible locations that I was looking at using for my movie, these locations included filming around my home but I instead decided to use the college area because I felt like it would be easier. The reason for filling out a scouting sheet would be to make sure that the areas for filming will be usable and that it would be alright with the people who live in the surrounding area.

Camera shot list

Below is the camera shot list that I used throughout the duration of filming my movie, this was referred to the whole when I was thinking about what kind of shots I would use and what ways they would be shot. The reason for doing a camera shot list is to know how many shots you'll need and what type of shots you'll need, it's also important for the different camera angles that will be used.

For my movie several of my shots were medium shots because I wanted to have a portion of the background and environment in the shot so that it looks a bit more professional.

Location Release

This is the Location release sheet that I used for my movie to see which locations I would be able to use for filming purposes, this is important because it shows how I would go about getting permission to shoot in some locations outside of the college if I intended on doing so.

The reason for filling out a location release form is so that if you are filming in a location that you don't have permission to use you can have the owner of the property to fill it out so that you can the space.

Risk Assessment Part A

This is the Risk assessment form for part A, this shows the kinds of risk that could come about when filming, these include trip hazards or repetitive action when going through fight scenes. It also shows the level of the risks going from least to most likely to cause serious harm.

The reasons for doing a risk assessment is so that if there are any dangers to health or dangers to the working environment they will need to be noted so that they isn't disrupt any filming that would take place.

Risk Assessment Part B

This is the second part of the Risk Assessment form for part B, showing the risks and how I'll go about making sure that nothing goes wrong during filming. It also shows who could be at risk if anything goes wrong for example if someone trips I'll have to move and possible hazards out of the way.

The reason for filling out this section of the risk assessment is to show how risky each danger is so that it can be avoided and it's also important to fill it out so that if anything goes wrong with the lighting, then it can be taken care of quickly.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard set in place for my movie, showing the starting point to the ending of my movie in written form because it's easy to write out my story instead of drawing each separate part out and it's easier to understand when it's written out. But, after drawing the scenes out it helps my movie make sense.

Another reason why it's better to have a drawn out storyboard is that it shows the ideas of the movie much clearer than just having it written out because you lose some of the emersion that might've been built up. This is why I decided to go for both because the drawings will help the audience to better understand the story of my movie and how it plays out.

Media Representations

Media Representations

·      Gender – Batman - Predominantly a male oriented movie, painting a clear image of never giving up in the face of danger. The whole movie is showing how much revenge can motivate you to do good in the world and rid the world of any danger in bad guys. It's represented in a fairly positive way because Batman's main goal is all about getting revenge on the murderer of his parents when he was a child.

·      Age – Scarface – Massive amounts of violence, and foul language throughout is clearly aimed at the more adult audience. The age group for Scarface is represented clearly when there is massive amounts of violence show on screen

·      Social Grade – Romeo + Juliet – This is the timeless story of “star crossed lovers”, where two people from separate families get together against the family’s wishes.

·      Ethnicity – Zootopia – Dealing with issues of racism in the workplace, and how you can overcome these issues. This is being shown in a way that could be seen as a negative because a lot of people find racism as a touchy subject which brings about arguments and press conferences that spark mass debates.

·      Places – Die Hard – perfectly showing different locations throughout the movie to a great degree especially Nakatomi Plaza where the majority of the film takes place.

Media Messages

When analyzing media representations, ask yourself:

·      What is being represented?
·      How is it represented?
·      What is it suggesting or implying?
·      Who is it speaking to and why?
·      Who produced it?
·      Is it typical or “unnatural”?

·      How do we respond to it?
