Article for Media Campaign

Article for Media Campaign

The Emoji Movie

The Emoji Movie was released on July 28th, 2017 it grossed over $217 million worldwide however it was panned by critics. It's also award winning, at the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards it won in four categories: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst screen Combo and Worst screenplay. With these awards it has become the first animated film to receive both nominations and wins in those categories.

The emoji movie first come about when the director wanted to take a new concept of animated movies, this was modelled from Tony Leondis' love of Toy Story. After thinking to himself "what is the new toy out there that hasn't been explored?" While thinking of this idea Leondis wanted to originally do a movie where emojis were in the real world but was convinced by his producer that a movie about emojis living inside a phone was a better idea.

While many people hated the movie for being "unfunny, and a waste of time". Several outlets for media and movies, including the BBC News called The Emoji Movie one of the worst movies of 2017. Another reviewer (David Ehrlich from IndieWire) claimed that "Make no mistake, The Emoji Movie is very, very, very bad... but real life is just too hard to compete with right now".

As you can see from the below screenshots many people have heard of the first Emoji Movie so it will be likely that they will be aware of a sequel coming out in the future.

Unit 1: Representations: Magazines

Constructing Representations: Magazines

Magazines cater to a reader's interests (e.g. celebrities, fashion) and hobbies (e.g. computers, fitness.) They are decided by specifically to be dipped in and out rather than be read straight through - so they need to use tactics to catch reader's attention. Everything in a magazine has been selected specifically to appeal directly to a target audience via the way the magazine represents specific things.

For this front cover it prominently features Dave Grohl (frontman of rock-band Foo Fighters) with the pull out quote "This will kill me". It would most likely be targeted for the male audience and would likely be aimed at the middle class because people of lower class might not find musical stars that interesting.

For the design and layout of this magazine all of the fonts that have been used are all bold and stand out to catch the reader's attention. The whole space of the layout for the magazine has been used to ensure that the audience finds the magazine front cover interesting and exciting.

Unit 1 - Constructing Representations: Music Videos

Rock

- Focus on the artists
- On stages or unusual settings
- Low key lighting
- Alternate unusual costume designs

Pop

- Colourful
- Studio or familiar setting
- Choreographed dance routines

Indie

- A display of various musical instruments
- Low budget feel
- Understated costumes
- Unglamorous / simple locations (streets, warehouses)

R&B

- Symbols of wealth such as gold, jewelry, cars
- Often social gatherings

  • Linear narrative - A story throughout the video, seeing where the characters go and what they're trying to represent.

  • Fragmented Narrative - Parts of a story not in a particular order.

  • Performance - Band performing on a stage, this shows the performers as legit artists and musicians.

  • Mixed - A narrative video that frequently just to an artist performing the song.

  • Cameo - The artist features through the video but not performing.

Select a music video of your choice:

Stereophonics - Handbags and Gladrags

How is the band being represented?

The band is being represented in a way to show them being

How are others represented?

How is the song being promoted?

How is the audience expected to feel about what they see or hear?

They are expected to be cited to hear another Stereophonics song because it was a single from the album "Just Enough Education to Perform" and was released on December 12th 2001 and January 2nd 2002.

What style of video is being used? How does it fulfill (or not) conventions for that type of music video?

The style of the video is more relaxed and calm compared to other Stereophonics songs, because this song includes: a microphone, saxophone, violins, a piano, trumpets, both an electric and acoustic guitars and drums. As far as going along with typical conventions of a rock music video this one doesn't really fit the stereotypical features of a rock music video because it isn't just guitars and drums.

Unit 10 - Short Movie

Idea for my movie/Video

During the beginning stages of coming up with ideas for my short movie, it was all about what would be suitable for a college movie project. So, for my short movie I went with a simple idea of a killer hunting down some college student for all of their wrong doings. The short starts of with the camera placed at the killer's feet, to start of the movie with a intriguing opening that will get the audience interested, and it will also show the audience that they will be watching a horror movie with this opening.

Below is the link for my short movie:
