Progress Diary
In this first bit of raw footage it shows the filming of the location I was using for the location for the opening of my movie, this wasn't used because it didn't really fit with what I wanted.
This bit of raw footage won't be used because it wasn't at the right angle that I wanted for my movie also there was people in the background that were distracting and I didn't want to have to shoot from this angle again. On this bit I used some camera techniques to help make this footage a bit better but in the end it didn't effect much.
For this bit of raw footage, it's close to the final version that's being used but has somethings in it that will be different in the final version of this angle. I did change some of the settings on the camera, one of them being the ISO because it was a bit darker when shooting then I tried to change it but I kept it at the default setting because it looked a lot better.
Editing diary
For the first day of shooting I wanted to get the forrest scenes finished and shot first so it can be used whenever would fit best in my movie, this was also apart of the non-continuity edit for my movie. This shooting continued for a few hours to try and get some things that would work for my trailer that I would have to edit after recording my footage, this resulted in me filming the nearby location to show off the environment then I moved onto to filming Alex doing the things I told him, this took a few takes to get it the way I wanted it to be and to make sure it was done right.
For the second and third days of shooting it was the interview segment of my short movie, this was done in a little room used for some projects like this but also can be used as the control room for the photography studio. The reason why I chose this room for this interview was because I feel like it fits the best out of other rooms that I was going to use (in the end I decided to not use those rooms and settled on the control room), this interview consists of me (the cameraman) asking questions to the supposed tormentor about his actions and if he feels remorse over what he had done. The interview also took a few takes to get right because some of the questions and answers weren't what I needed or wanted and wouldn't be useful towards my short movie.
When I started editing my movie I decided to use some techniques that I had used previously these being cross-dissolves and dips to black. The reason for using these is because I'm comfortable with using them and feel like I can use them well enough to the intended message across to what I'm wanting to see after envisioning it in the planning stages. Another thing that I had done when starting to edit was to split up my clips and have them be in different places in the workspace area so it would be easier to find them when it came down to wanting to use them.
Full Movie
This is the edit for my full short movie. As you can see its round about 2 and a half minutes long and I think it's one of the better edits for my movie because it features some music which I feel like is suitable towards the way that I shot my movie and also the way I edited it. One of the things that I do like about my final edit was that the music I used fit the type of tone I was going for and I think it worked well being quieter during some parts of my movie so the interview could be heard clearly. Another thing that I like about my final edit is that the opening credits and the opening few moments fit together and the POV shots at the beginning also help tell a somewhat darker tone that my movie could have.
One of the things that I didn't like about my movies was that it used similar clips as the non-continuity edit so they could be seen as being very similar and not having much difference in the two edits. Another thing I didn't like was some of the interview segments didn't make much sense as they were taken out of context but I feel like it made them special in that way because it made the interviewee seen a bit chaotic and reckless.
Non-Continunity edit
This is my non-continuity edit for my movie as you can see its round about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, this was done in the way to make it feel like the movie could be in any order and still make sense. One of the things that I liked about my non-continuity edit was the way that it was edited this being having no music with and just having the clips playing, another thing that I liked about it was the way it was shot.
One of the things I didn't like about this edit of my movie was the fact that not much is changed from the final edit for my movie but this was due to not having a lot of time to shoot my movie but I think with this time constraint I think it went well enough.
Movie Trailer
This is my trailer for my short movie, as you can see it's round about 50 seconds long so it could be used as a teaser for my movie to get people interested in seeing what my movie would turn out to be. One of the things that I think went well with my trailer is the cuts to black to space out the conversation/interview so it feels like the full interview will be interesting enough for people to go out of their way and see my movie. I also think that the beginning of the trailer looks good too with the footage of the forest setting a dark tone.
One of things I could've improved upon was making this a bit longer and using more interesting clips to make the trailer look more impressive and better looking. I could've also used some more editing techniques here to make it seem more dark than I was originally intending it to be.

Unit 2: Business card
This business card will help me to find work as wanting to be a freelance journalist, the reason why this is important is so it will help other businesses find out about me and the work that I create as a freelancer. If I do this well it will help me get ahead as a journalist because people will be familiar with the work that I do, will help me get better work and get more important exclusives and be more well known among different companies and newspapers/magazines.
Unit 2: Business Development Meeting
Business Development Meeting
In the business development meeting one of the things that I think went well was that there weren't any awkward pauses or anything that could go wrong. This was done by making the conversation flow freely and not have anything in that would be wasted and only having important points to talk about. An example of this would be when talking about the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer I gave a fairly detailed description of the work I did for works experience a few years ago which really got me interested in being a journalist.
Another thing that I think went well was when I was talking about how long I think it would take me to accomplish my dream job, the reason why for this was because I felt confident about talking about how I would progress onto further knowledge of journalism and how I would get into university and what to study (study at Sunderland university at foundation level for 3-4 years then progress further for another 4-5 years).
One thing that I think I could've done better would be to research more for industry contacts and get more information from then to see what kind of things I would need to do to help improve my journalist work and get noticed.

Unit 2: Mock interview
Mock Interview
One thing that I think went well with this interview was when the conversation went towards how I see myself within the next five years, the reason why is because I feel like I found a good place to talk from and got more comfortable when talking about this part. The answer being I think I could get to be a head writer and or a head editor for magazines and newspapers (although I'm not sure which specific magazines and newspapers.
Another thing that I think went well with this interview was being able to identify some weaknesses, these being sometimes a lack of concentration and getting distracted easily. The way that I mentioned getting around these is by listening to a specific type of music (mostly instrumental music or music with barely any lyrics in so I can concentrate better, sometimes putting music up loud enough helps too). The reason why I think this was a good section of the interview was because it helps lay out the kind of things I could improve upon in future.

Unit 2: Learning Aim D
University Visit
Jack and Harry started off by mentioning which type of journalism they both study (Jack working for LADbible and Harry working freelance), they then both talked about how they got into their respective journalism courses. After this they mentioned the difficulties about working for both, Harry said it’s hard to stay motivated while having no boss, but, the things he strives for is seeing his name on the bottom of a website and getting full recognition for his work. Jack also mentioned the different changes that have been made to LADbible over the past few years, with them employing more women writers and although these women writers have endured horribly sexist comments they continue to work there to try and make the environment a better work place.
Harry also mentioned the differences in writing about football and his other interests in both freelance and his little time working for a company. After this several questions got asked to both Harry and Jack about the different kind of things they've been asked to do for work and how long it normally takes them to get a piece done in time (if the deadline is tight it normally has to be that day, other times it can be few weeks but only if it's a big project piece). Another question was "How does pay get decided?" Their answer was it depends on what work it is (freelance or company-based) For freelance works it depends on how many words is needed then a price is decided for how much per word and it goes from there, with company based it's wholly decided upon by the actual company.

Unit 5: Subject Specialist Investigation
Unit 5: Subject Specialist Investigation
2018 saw record growth in LGBTQ roles on television
In this article I found some interesting information about how the LGBTQ+ community is represented and sometimes misrepresented. The first bit of information that interested me is that the amount of LGBTQ+ series regulars has increased by 8.8% for broadcast TV, GLAAD counted 26 trans characters on TV which is 9 more than last year. A large portion of this progression is from Ryan Murphy’s show Pose which features five new trans characters.
In GLAAD’s study they say that Netflix is still the leading media format for diverse representation of their LGBTQ characters, massively beating out other subscription based streaming services Amazon Prime and Hulu.
A content analysis of LGBT representation on broadcast and streaming television
In a study published in 2006 by Amber Raley and Jennifer Lucas they aimed to understand how the representation of the LGBT community has changed since 2001 and how representation on streaming platforms differs from broadcasted shows. During this time of their study they found out that suggest that representation of bisexual and transgender characters has increased since 2001 and the LGBT characters are being portrayed making displays of affection more than was seen in 2001. The analysis also shows that the representation of bisexual and transgender characters is still lagging far behind the usual lesbian and gay male characters in some ways, overall there is still more LGBT representation on streaming platforms than on any broadcast television.
When asked about same-sex marriage in an interview (in 2015), Vice President Joe Biden stated that “I think Will & Grace probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody’s ever done so far”.
The Hollywood Production Code established and used from 1930 to 1968 and the code of practices for Television Broadcasters that was used from 1952 to 1983, both simply prohibited any depictions of homosexuality. Some early depictions were mainly of victims of violence or drag queens. In the (19)70’s and 80’s, some shows began to show gay characters in a more positive way however, only for one-off episodes (meaning no recurring character). In this way the character’s homosexuality was often presented as the main storyline or problem of the episode rather than a defining quality of that specific character, and that story within the episode was primarily based on how it may or may not have affected the heterosexual characters.
Why LGBT Representation Is Important In Media
When the community gets positive representation, it helps to remove any negative stigma that may be surrounding the LGBT community. It may also help those that are a part of the LGBT community to feel more comfortable about coming out about who they are and not feel ridiculed. This can avoided by always having someone to talk to and within the media there are many role models for those that feel they might be ridiculed although in some aspects representation can be seen as a selling point and not as an important plot point.
In broadcast television, of the 901 regular characters set to appear on scripted broadcast primetime programming 58 or 6.4% were identified as being either gay, lesbian, bisexual, and or transgender. This is the highest percentage that GLAAD has found in, there was also an additional 28 recurring LGBT characters. For cable television, the number of series regular LGBT characters that were used on scripted primetime cable increased to 103, and recurring characters increased to 70, adding up to 173 characters. On streaming services there was 51 LGBTQ series regulars appearing in scripted series on the popular streaming services Amazon, Hulu and Netflix as well as having 19 recurring characters.
Bisexual+ characters help make up the 28% of the LGBTQ characters that was tracked across all platforms, which is a slight increase to what it was previous. These bisexual+ characters are still heavily women than men (75 to 18 respectively). For results relating to transgender characters it was found that 17 were either recurring or series regulars and of this 17, nine were trans women, four are trans men and four were non-binary. For the first time Asexual characters have been represented with one character being found on cable and streaming each but non on broadcast yet, however moving forward GLAAD would like this representation to increase as asexuality is somewhat invisible regarding representation in media.
As far as women go regarding representation of characters 43% are series regulars on broadcast primetime television, which is a decrease but only by a small amount. However, women are still hugely underrepresented with the U.S. population estimated at being 51% women. Of the 901 series regulars that were noted, around 40% or 356 of them are people of colour which is an increase, while percentages of LGBTQ people of colour on broadcast and on streaming services has significantly fallen.
Media Portrayal of LGBT people
The medias portray of the LGBT often varies depending on which portion of the media sector is being mentioned at the time, the whole acronym of LGBT is most commonly used throughout North America and many other English-speaking countries.
Between 1947 and 1950, 1,700 federal job applications were denied, 4,380 people were discharged from the military, and 420 were fired from their government jobs for being suspected homosexuals. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and many police departments kept some lists of known homosexuals, their favoured establishments, and friends; the U.S. Post Office kept track of addresses where material pertaining to homosexuality was mailed.
Media Representations of the LGBT Community and Stereotypes’ Homophobic Reinforcement
Homophobes may have perceived that gays are immoral, are evil, are impractical to have, based on what is seen on television and film. Moving images (such as tv and film) have been proven to be effective carriers of ideology, especially if it hits mainstream. This becomes problematic because these representations may cloud some judgement, reinforcing the irrational behaviour towards the LGBT community.
Media Coverage and Social Changes: Examining Valence of Portrayal of the LGBT Community from 2000 to 2014 in Two U.S. Magazines
In 1997, one of the most successful talk show hosts (at the time) Ellen DeGeneres first came out as lesbian in one episode of the comedy show “Ellen”. For many young members of the LGBT community often search for resources that could help educate them on their burgeoning sexuality. The media does play an effective role in teaching many individuals about sexuality and sexual behaviour, so looking at exactly what young LGBT members might be learning about themselves from the media has some merits.
Focus Group Founding's
For my focus study on the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in media specifically TV, I found out some interesting details and would like to share them. The way that I began my study was to first introduce the topic of discussion, that being how the LGBTQ+ community is represented in the media and if more work needs to be done to make the whole community more inclusive. When I started this study there were a few rules put in place, the first of these being there are no right or wrong answers but differing opinions. Another important rule is that there will be no arguments and not need to agree with others but others opinions and views must be respected.
In this study I asked the follow questions to around 5 people because I felt it would be easier to get responses that will fit well with my survey that I also produced and share with multiple people to get their opinions on the LGBTQ+ community in media. The first of the questions I asked was how old the people answering were, with most of the answers coming in at 16-18, then a few answered 19-21. The second question that I asked was what do they identify as, most responses were female and an equal amount saying male and prefer not to say.
The third question that I asked was if they were a part of the LGBTQ+ community, the majority answered say no with some saying yes, the next question is a two-parter the first part being if they are aware of the representation in media the overwhelming majority result was yes, the second part of that question was “If yes what kind of things are you proud of”? Some answers were saying the awareness that people have towards the LGBTQ+ community, one said the development of LGBT characters in mainstream media and another said how much more it is accepted and talked about and how it’s a lot more popular.

Planning a Single Camera Production
Genre
For my movie the genre that I'm working towards is a horror (with slasher being the sub-genre), this is because I feel like it'll be the most simple to do and not get overly complicated. The way that I come up with the idea of it being a slasher was by looking back on my movie from last year and seeing the many different things I would change about it and how to make it a lot better. The movie that I shot last year needed a lot of work done and was done in a few hours instead of being planned out months in advance this was a massive issue because it should've been done a few weeks before I finished so I would have more time to edit it together and make it better or to go back and do re-shoots but since I left it too late this wasn't done.Intended Purpose
The intended purpose of my movie is for the audience to have fun watching it and have a enjoyable experience, the way I'll go about doing this is to try and make my movie the best it can be and make sure that it make sense and easy to follow and understand throughout. I'm hoping that my movie is fun to watch because of the time I put into and I hope that when I get to editing it, it comes out as good as I would like it to.
Intended Target Audience
For my movie the movie will be aimed for a mature audience this is because of the sudden nature of the random attack and the interview section included later on in the movie. This interview is basically asking the killer why he did the things he did and if he feels guilty about it or if he regrets anything, this will be some of the reason why my movie is aimed for a mature audience.

Film script draft
THE SCARES IN THE HUNT Written by Connor Crampton
THE SCARES IN THE HUNT
EXT.DAY. OUTSIDE IN A PARK close to Bede College:
Frank, Shaun and Jacob start walking towards a gated off area of the park to relax and talk about life and if they believe in certain things and superstitions. They are drinking when suddenly they all hear a loud bang that distracts their attention.
CUT TO: They all go to check on what it was, but don't notice anything out of the ordinary. That's when they all here the bang again.
FRANK: "Is anyone there?"
After getting closer to where they think they heard the bang, another goes off in the distance this one much louder than the one previous. Frank and Shaun go over to the second banging noise while Jacob stays where they heard the first incase something shows up.
ALL THREE: "Is there anybody out here with us?"
SLOW FADE TO:Title card (The Scares in the Hunt)
EXT. EVENING.
CUT TO: Frank moving closer to where he heard the second bang with Shaun not far behind him, because they both want to know what's happening and why there are loud bangs in a pretty quiet area.
Changes.
For the final version of my script I made a few changes so it would be more suitable and sound a lot better and be more interesting

Unit 19: Roles and Responsibilities
Writers
The main role of any writer for any production is to be able to research certain topics or things that will be discussed in the project, they are solely responsible for creating and developing an engaging narrative featuring an emotional impact with the viewers. A lot of writers that work on projects are freelance (meaning they work for free and are hired on for particular assignments).
Communication
When pitching ideas to higher ups in a its very important and crucial to have clear communication skills so that the producers and director has a basic understanding of the idea that is being pitched to them. In any media format it's important to be able to make your points known when discussing ideas that would benefit the whole production, this is mostly important during meetings when many ideas are getting pitched around to see what will get made.
Time Management
When working in a professional environment it's important to be able to manage time effectively so that you will have the correct amount of time to get a script completed on time. It's also important to do this because it shows that you are interested in writing scripts and trying to get projects green-light.
Unit 10: Film Production
Arguably the most iconic scene from Die Hard, where McClane kills Hans after shooting a window behind Hans and killing one of his guards, and Hans stumbles towards the window but grabs onto Holly’s wristwatch so McClane unfastens it Hans falls to his death.

In the gaming industry writers work the same way where there is big groups of writers that bounce ideas off of one another to figure out the storyline. For certain game companies the writers work in small groups to ensure the story is exactly how it is wanted.
Corporations
Almost all pitching ideas for four of the biggest corporations (Fox, Sony, Disney and Universal) go through established relationships this help to create a "safe bet" so that established names who have already worked for big companies or agencies. The biggest UK corporations like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 often commission scripts and budgets for TV shows that will appear on their channels.
Sometimes with writers being freelance workers they are given opportunities to submit some scripts to big corporations and if the corporations like the scripts they could possibly commission the script to be made for one of their channels.

Unit 10: Film Production
For the task that I have been given I have to analyse and compare the stylistic codes and conventions of fictional genre film in reference to its target audience. The genres that I decided to look at are action and horror, the reason why is because they are the most popular and most recognisable. By looking at two iconic action movies Die Hard (1988) and Hot Fuzz (2007) I will be able to compare the conventions and characteristics and see how they are linked.
As the most used film genre, action films often use the same conventions these include; fights, weapons, explosions etc. These have made action films stand out and always seek attention from an audience, and help them to have an emotional attachment towards the protagonist. These films would be mostly aimed at people who enjoy 80’s action movies (Die Hard) or other action movies (Hot Fuzz). I will also be looking two horror movies (Shaun of the Dead and Saw), and try to find a link in both movies to connect them together.
There is a popular theory by theorist Steve Neale suggesting that “genres are instances of repetition and difference”, this means that cinema genres are made up of repetition and that often movies include the same things in other movies. For example, in action movies there are always gunfights and explosions and that audiences enjoy seeing the same things over because they will be able to recognise it. Neale’s theory and ideas are seen in both Die Hard and Hot Fuzz where both movies have gun fights and explosions. These movies both share several recognisable genre stylistic codes and conventions.
Arguably the most iconic scene from Die Hard, where McClane kills Hans after shooting a window behind Hans and killing one of his guards, and Hans stumbles towards the window but grabs onto Holly’s wristwatch so McClane unfastens it Hans falls to his death.

Why I chose Media
The main reason why I chose the media course is because I found it a very interesting course to study, and wanted to know about the television and film production side of the media industry as well as learn more about the journalism side of all media. The TV and movie side of media has always interested me even when I was younger and just casually watching the news and as I was getting older I wanted to know how how a TV production was put together and how hard it would be to work in this industry.
What I hope to accomplish
The thing that I hope to accomplish after finishing media is to get the best grades possible for all of my work for this year, this is so I can either get some freelance work or hopefully work for a major organisation. The reason why I hope to accomplish what I want is because I feel like it will help me massively and make me a lot more confident in general.
What job I want in media
The job that I want most is to be a journalist for magazines in the film/TV genre, this is because this is where I think I'll be able to do the best work I can because of my massive interest in film and tv and the different aspects that pull the industries together. The main reason why i believe that I'll be doing the best work i can is because I'm already interested in journalism and writing so I think it'll be a good fit and that I'll get on ad work well.
What backup job I would want
I haven't thought about this much but I know that I'll have to incase my journalism job doesn't work out for whatever reason, so for my backup job I would want to be a writer because I already have a interest in writing so this will be a easy second choice job. The reason why I would want writing as a backup job is because it still involves me being creative in some way but on a bigger scale,

Draft Storyboards/ Final Storyboards
This first storyboard shows off how the story will process and how the movie will change for being set out as a basic horror movie with friends friends and a killer on the loose.
In this storyboard I've added camera cuts and put in different camera angles so it doesn't look like its all shot in a long shot. Instead there are close ups and medium shots.
The picture on the left is the main location for my movie which is a forest because I felt it would help tell the story better of three friends getting lost in the woods when a psychopath finds them and hunts them down.
After thinking over some locations the forest area fits the best because there is a lot of space to move around in so it won't make my movie feel slow by using the same spots to shoot in. There is also a building the friends get taken to by
Sackman (the killer), to freshen up the shooting locations and to also have a mini torture scene in.
This picture to the left features a four-shot of the basic plot of the movie from Sackman's point of view. In the first cell he grabs his signature weapon (his ballpoint hammer), then in the second cell it's the attack between Sackman and two of the three friends where he knocks them out and they're left bloodied. In the third cell its the close up of the hammer covered in blood then finally in the fourth cell it shows a close up of the two friends bloodied and left by themselves.
This picture is a short summary of what happens in my movie, with the first cell showing the friends walking through the forest, then quickly going onto the second cell of the friends walking through but one of them getting taken then the third cell showing another friend taken leaving one alone looking at the knife on the floor left purposely by Sackman, then the final cell showing a close up of Sackman with the last friend in the background laying on the floor after being hit with Sackman's hammer (his signature weapon).
This pictures shows the two weapons that will be used during my movie, the hammer as I said previously will be the main weapon while the knife will be used as a starting point for the attacks and also be used a as a brief distraction for one of the characters to find when wondering through the forest .
In this four shot of the characters you can clearly tell who the "good guys" are and who the "bad guy" is, the reason for clearly labelling them is so that the audience has a clear understanding of who to root for in my movie and who to care for. As you can also see I annotated the drawings to show what kind of costume the characters in the movie will be wearing and the significance of the bad guy wearing a sack to cover up his identity.
In this picture it shows a storyboard design of what my short movie could look like if it was adapted into a music video. As you can see there will be a few cuts but it will mostly be fades and close ups of the actual performance. The reason for doing this is so the audience can get a feel of what my movie would look like, where it would be the friends playing on guitars and singing then a quick cut to a phone saying "2 missed calls". Then cutting to the mysterious person (in this case Sackman) walking through a forest at first then going full sprint to try and get to where the friends are to show them his singing and his old drumkit.
EVALUATION OF ALL STORYBOARDS + SUITABILITY
In the end I'm proud of how my storyboards turned out and that they make sense and fully relate to the plot of my movie, the first storyboard went through some changes before I finally get it the way it was needed and I feel like it will help the audience follow along the story I'm trying to make with my movie. The added camera angles and edits will also help other people visualise how the movie will be presented in its final form.
For the location of my movie I wanted it to be solely based in a forest so it would have the proper tone of a horror movie where the "good guys" always find a way to hide away and remain un-hidden or get caught easily. The main reason for choosing the forest is because it wouldn't feel boring to shoot in and would have a interesting look to it for the plot being friends wondering through said forest then a mysterious masked figure takes them one by one.
The next storyboard follows the plot told in 4 easy to follow sections, the first of these being Sackman finding his signature weapon and going looking for any trespassers in his forest, if so then he'll do what he thinks is necessary. Leading into the second cell of him finding two of said trespassers and dealing with them his way, the reasons for setting out my storyboard like this was so Sackman would get his "side of the story" told and have his own spin put on the movie.
For the types of weapons used in my movie I think they will be suitable for the type of movie I'm making, mainly a horror movie so I feel like using a hammer and a knife will fit well with the intended audience and the type I'm making. Another reason why I think I chose the right weapons for my movie is because one of them can be used as a distraction later on in my movie which fits in well with a certain point of my plot.
In the four-shot of the characters it's laid out the exact way that I wanted it to so that it's obvious who the main character is, the secondary and third characters and the villain of my movie are. It is done in this way to help the audience identify who the "good guys" are and who the "bad guy" is, I also done it this way so that the audience get the significance of the outfits being worn by the characters and how much it means for the villain to cover up his face with a sack.
In the last storyboard it shows how my movie would look if it was to be adapted into a music video format, in this case there would be a few more cuts and edits than normal also a lot more close ups would be used to show off the different things happening. For example there would be close ups on one of the friends singing and playing guitar to give it a real music video vibe and also there would be cuts to show other things happening like one of the characters walking then running through a forest because they need to find out where the friends are playing.
